Effect Name: BCC Blobs Wipe

The BCC Blobs Wipe filter, part of the BCC Transitions group, transitions between two layers by animating an evolving, random blobby pattern of transparency which progressively reveals the underlying layer as the size of the transparent regions increases.

  • Background: This layer selection popup is not relevant when you have applied the filter as a true NLE-style transition and it will be hidden or disabled in that context. When applied as a normal “effect” as opposed to a transition, however, this menu is used to select the Incoming or Reveal layer for the transition.
  • Animation: Menu controlling what drives the animation of the transition.
    • Auto: Automatically generates a transition based on the transition length (when used as a transition) or the clip length (when used as a filter.)
    • Percent Done: Requires the user to set keyframes to control the transition progression.
  • Percent Done: When the Animation menu is changed to Percent Done then this slider can be manually keyframed to control the transition progression.
  • Invert Wipe: Flips the progression of the animation over the course of the transition so that regions which would have been the first to be wiped off are now the last to be wiped off and vice versa.
  • Softness: Softens the edges of the blob shapes.
  • Scale: Modifies the overall size of the blob pattern. Increasing Scale creates fewer and larger blobs.
  • Stretch Width: Stretches the blob pattern horizontally.
  • Offset: Shifts the position of the overall blob pattern.
  • Turbulence: Sets the complexity of the blob pattern. Higher values create increasingly more intricate and detailed blob patterns, whereas lower values create simpler and smoother blob shapes.
  • Turbulence Feedback: Determines the shape of the blob pattern with higher values producing more gnarled shapes or ringing patterns.
  • Turbulence Sub Scaling: Sets the size of the additional blob complexity that appears with increasing turbulence. Larger values tend to produce larger, smoother blobs whereas smaller values tend to addition additional fine detail to the blob shapes.
  • Seed: Sets the random starting point for the blob animation. Adjust the seed parameter to creating blob patterns with the same overall look and feel but with differently randomized blob positions and shapes.

Blob Animation Group

  • Flow Rate: Sets the speed of the motion of the Fractal Noise texture pattern.
  • Flow Direction: Sets the direction of the motion of the Fractal Noise texture pattern.
  • Morph Rate: Determines the rate at which the Fractal Noise texture surges and rotates inward as the filter auto-animates.

Gradient Group

  • Gradient On: Enables modulating the wipe shape by an additional linear gradient. This provides a less symmetrical wipe with the progression advancing earlier in some parts of the image than others along the line of the gradient.
  • Gradient Amount: Sets the intensity of the gradient effect. Small values produce little change to the wipe shape, whereas larger values generate an increasingly strong bias along the gradient direction.
  • Gradient Angle: Sets the direction of the linear gradient ramp. By default it is aligned from left to right but can be rotated to in any direction.

Extras Group

  • Output: Determines the output of the wipe. You can also use this menu to preview the matte, or preview the source channel used by the filter to create the effect. Not all of its options are relevant in all situations.
    • Mult. Alpha: Multiplies the alpha channel created by the filter with the source alpha channel. Only areas that are opaque in both alpha channels are opaque in the output. This results in an image whose opacity at each point is at most its input opacity. For an opaque input image, this is the same as Replace Alpha.
    • View Matte: Displays a grayscale preview of the alpha channel created by the filter. Opaque regions are white, and transparent regions are black.
    • Replace Alpha: replaces the source alpha with the matte created by the filter.
    • Screen Alpha: Screens the alpha channel created by the filter with the source alpha channel. Areas that are opaque in either alpha channel are opaque in the output.
    • Diff. Alpha:> subtracts the alpha channel created by the filter from the source alpha.
    • Zoom: Scales the input image to the size of the alpha channel created by the wipe. The image is positioned at the center of this alpha channel at its correct aspect. Zoom’s scaling is based on the computed alpha channel and is not sub-pixel animated. In some instances, adjusting parameters such as Influence and Texture can cause Zoom settings to appear jumpy.
    • Zoom Independent: When Zoom Independent is chosen, the effect is the same as Zoom, but each axis of the source scales independently.
    • Borders Only: When Borders Only is chosen, the wipe renders only the borders.
    • Borders w Source: Renders the borders over the source image.

Borders Group

  • Borders On: Enables all the borders contained in this and the individual border parameter groups.
  • Master Thickness: Sets the thickness of all borders.
  • Master Opacity: Sets the opacity for all the borders, expressed as a percentage.
  • Master Offset: Determines the position of all borders relative to the wipe progress.
  • Scale Borders: Scales the borders with the wipe transition.

Individual Borders Groups

Each Transition Wipe effect can include up to three independent borders. Each border group contains the same parameters. To create only two borders, you can use only the controls in this group. To make three borders, create the first border using the parameters in the Border Parameter Group and use this group for the additional and master border controls. Borders are composited in order; if all three borders are used, Border 3 is composited over Border 2, which is composited over Border 1.

  • Border On: Enables the individual border. If this checkbox is disabled, no border is created and the remaining parameters have no affect.
  • Border Thickness: Sets the thickness of the border, in pixels.
  • Border Opacity: Sets the opacity of the border, expressed as a percentage.
  • Border Color: Determines set the color of the border.
  • Border Layer: Selects the border from another timeline layer instead of the chosen Color.
  • Border Softness: Sets the softness of the border and is scaled to the width of the border.
  • Border Balance: Determines the balance of softness between the inside and outside edge of the border.
  • Border Offset: Sets the border relative to the edge of the wipe.

Influence Group

The Influence and Influence Map parameters allow a channel in the incoming or outgoing clip to influence the wipe. The influence layer pushes the wipe border in or out based on the value of each pixel.

Note: Using a moving video texture such as water as both an Influence layer and a border can produce a pleasing stylized effect.

  • Influence: Enables the Influence parameters.
  • Influence Intensity: Sets the intensity of the influence.
  • Inf. Layer: Determines the layer that is used for the influence.
  • Channel: Sets the channel that is used for the influence.
  • Inf. Threshold: Works in conjunction with the Inf. Softness parameter to set the value in the Influence Layer above which pixels are considered fully on.
  • Inf. Softness: Softens the edges of the influence.
  • Blur: Applies a blur to the edges of the Influence channel before creating the wipe.
  • Choke: Applies a choke to the wipe.
  • Bidirectional Influences: Allows influence to go in both directions.
  • White Noise On: Enables an additional noise texture
  • Noise Intensity: Sets the intensity of the noise texture.
  • Noise Softness: Sets the softness applied to the noise texture.
  • Noise Seed: Determines the value input to the random number used by the filter.
  • Noise Morph Rate: Sets the rate at which the noise texture evolves over time.

Post Process Group

  • Gamma: Sets the value of the middle tones while leaving the white and black of the image unaltered.
  • Alpha Offset: Sets an offset that is added to the output alpha.
  • Post Blur: Blurs the alpha channel after the matte is created.
  • Choke: Applies a choke to the matte.

Composite Group

The controls in this group let you composite an underlying clip with the source image, and allow brightness, contrast, and apply modes to be used in the blended region.

  • Blend: Sets an apply mode to use in the blended region.
  • Blend Brightness: Sets the brightness used in the blended region.
  • Blend Contrast: Sets the amount of contrast used in the blended region.
  • Mix with Original: Blends the source and filtered images.

The Animation Tuning Group

  • Ease In: Controls how quickly or slowly the effect amount increases at the beginning of the transition.
  • Ease Out: Controls how quickly or slowly the effect amount decreases at the end of the transition.
  • View Ease Curve: (Only visible/enabled in hosts that don’t support heads up display widgets for manipulating these controls directly on screen.) Enable this control to display a preview graph of the the animation curves rendered into in the composite window.
