Lens Distortion Interchange via Image Distortion Maps

It’s generally convenient to have lens un-distortion and re-distortion applied in your favorite compositing package, rather than having to bring it through SynthEyes (especially to distort additional non-image channels). Since the math can vary between various software packages, it is often not possible to use the coefficients from SynthEyes in other software.

Rather than trying to have identical mathematics in different software, image distortion maps aka STmaps aka UVmaps can be used to represent the distortion in a simple consistent way that is readily available or easy to reproduce in other applications.

Tip : Image distortion maps can also be used to transport 360VR stabilization.

If you need to, you can create these image distortion maps not only with SynthEyes, but also in other software by distorting a reference image; the distorted image has enough information to allow the distortion to be reproduced elsewhere.

The main drawback of image distortion maps is that they require significant time to compute, and quite a bit of storage if animated distortion is present. (You must not compress them!)
