Unless you just arrived from outer space, you already know that Star Wars: The Force Awakens recently hit theaters with box office smashing results. The team at Imagineer Systems is thrilled that artists at both Bad Robot and Industrial Light & Magic used mocha Pro to help make the magic happen! The creativity of Star Wars obsessed fans is legendary. To celebrate the premier of the latest chapter, Garth Lee, Senior Motion Designer of Scorch London created this awesome video of iconic Star Wars vehicles in and above the streets of London. Scorch London is a full service creative advertising agency based in the heart of Soho.

The majority of Scorch London’s work involves visual effects to some degree. Garth’s favorite type of work is big compositing projects. He says, “We love mocha Pro for simple things like screen replacements etc., but it really comes into its own on the bigger, more interesting jobs, where we need to track big camera pans or remove unwanted artifacts. Getting a solid track is key to making any composited element integrate into a scene well. If it’s not solid, it’s never going to look good, mocha is key to achieving this.”
Garth also put together this VFX breakdown of his Star Wars video. In addition to planar tracking and roto, Garth used mocha Pro’s 3D Camera Solve module to export FBX data to Maxon Cinema 4D.
Of course, not all of Scorch London’s work – or use of mocha – is for Star Wars. Here’s Garth’s VFX breakdown of a spot for French carmaker Renault. He explains that “mocha Pro was essential for this spot where we superimposed a massive scalextric track into the streets of London, and raced a couple of cars around them. A lot of cleans plates were needed, so mocha Pro’s Remove Module** ** came in real handy for that.”
Garth is also an avid musician and being a VFX pro makes for some pretty impressive videos. In this music video for his band BRO, Garth again used mocha Pro as an integral part of the project. “Being completely in control of our own video meant our only limits were our own skills, so we made the most outrageous thing we could think up. mocha was really useful for all the live shots, especially the shots at the end where I integrated the games characters into the live scene.”
