If you have been experiencing difficulties with Boris FX 9 and Final Cut Pro, follow the directions below that pertain to your version of FCP and Processor type (Intel or Non-Intel). Please note, these instructions are for Boris FX 9 only. If you are using Boris FX 8 , please contact Boris Technical Support at the link provided at the bottom of this posting. Some of the downloads you may need are currently not available on our website and would need to be emailed you by a Tech Support Representative.
If you are using FCP v5.1.2 on a Power PC (non-Intel Mac), the Boris FX 9 TRANSITIONS will not work. Apple made changes between v5.1.1 and v5.1.2 of FCP that caused Boris transitions not to work. The rest of Boris FX 9 works fine though. Apple (not Boris FX) is aware of the transitions issue and is currently working to correct it. At this time, we do not know when Apple will release this fix.
Boris FX 9 transitions will work with FCP versions 5.1 and 5.1.1 on Power PC (non-Intel Mac).
At the present time, Boris FX 9 TRANSITIONS will not work on Intel based MacIntosh systems no matter which version of FCP you are using. The rest of Boris FX 9 works fine. Apple (not Boris FX) is aware of the transitions issue and is currently working to correct it. At this time, we do not know when this fix will be released Apple.
Below is a of insetstructions on how to get Boris FX 9 working with FCP. It is divided into two parts. The first part explains how to uninstall Boris FX 9 from either an Intel or Non-Intel machine. The second part will explain how to reinstall Boris FX 9 according to your version of Boris FX 9, FCP and Processor type (Intel or Non-Intel). The reason we have you uninstall Boris FX 9 is to clean out your system and give you a new start. It's possible some of you may have tried an update patch or two in an attempt to get Boris FX 9 working again. By uninstalling Boris FX 9 and deleting all previously downloaded patches, scripts or "Try and Buys" you may have on your system, we can eliminate the possibility of reinstalling an outdated patch, a patch that may have become corrupt during transfer or something that is just plain useless to the cause. Even if you haven't downloaded any patches, please delete what you will be instructed to delete. This may look like a lot but it really just boils down to deleting a few files and folders and then reinstalling.
*** Make sure you don't have any Boris FX 9 presets saved in any of the folders we are going to have you delete in this process. ***
PART ONE:
First, uninstall Boris FX 9 completely and delete all previously downloaded patches or "Try and Buys". Also, delete the preferences for FCP. Here are the locations of what to delete. Delete the items whose name or description appears in "quotations".
*** Again, make sure that none of the folders you are about to delete contain any presets. The "BorisFX" folder does contain the keyframe library for Boris FX 9 and other Boris applications so, make sure you move anything saved in there. ***
1. Hard Drive-Applications- " Boris FX 9.x".
2. HD-Library-Application Support- "BorisFX" and/or "Boris FX" (you may not have both).
3. HD-Library-Application Support-Final Cut System Support-Plugins-"every Boris FX plug in". Leave text scrambler, title 3d, title crawl and vector shape there.
4. HD-Users-you-Library-Preferences-Final Cut Pro User Data- "Final Cut Pro Obj Cache", (the next two are optional, the OBJ cache is most important) "Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs", "Final Cut Pro Prof Cache".
PART TWO:
Before you reinstall, make sure that you have the "Ownership and Permissions" set to "read/write" for the following folders. It is possible even though you are logged in as the admin, to have a folder or two not set to "read/write". It is also possible that when you updated to or installed FCP 5.1.x, the "Final Cut Pro System Support" folder was set to "read only".
Here is a list of the folders to check. This applies to each folder in the chain. You will be asked to check a few more after the reinstallation Boris FX 9.

Now, once you've checked them and/or made any chances, follow the directions below according to your version of Boris FX 9, FCP and Processor type (Intel or Non-Intel).
CD Install:
Install Boris FX 9 from your CD as you normally would. Then run the " FX 9.1 Update." patch (see below for link). The name of the file this downloads to your machine should be called "B FX 9.1 Updater.dmg". During the install of Boris FX 9.1 updater patch, check: " Boris FX Keyframer Mac -Universal", "Boris FX for FCP Mac -Universal plugins" (this will automatically check the next three boxes) and "Boris FX Components" and then "Install". You WILL NOT have to launch FCP with the Cap Locks on and then relaunch with them off.
*** If you also have Boris Continuum Complete 4 on your Intel Mac, run the "Fix for compatibility between Calligraphy and BCC AE 4.1 on Mac Intel." script (see below for link). ***
Try and Buy Install:
Please, download a new Boris FX 9 "Try and Buy" and install that (see below for link). During the install of Boris FX 9 "Try and Buy", check: " Boris FX Keyframer non -Universal", "Boris FX for FCP non -Universal plugins" (this will automatically check the next three boxes) and "Boris FX Components" and then "Install" You WILL NOT have to launch FCP with the Cap Locks on and then relaunch with them off.
*** If you also have Boris Continuum Complete 4 on your Intel Mac, run the "Fix for compatibility between Calligraphy and BCC AE 4.1 on Mac Intel." script (see below for link). ***
FCP v5.1.2 on Power PC:
Follow the instructions above for Intel Mac users. This goes for both CD or "Try and Buy" install. Since the Boris FX 9 TRANSITIONS currently don't work in FCP v5.1.2, we advise installing the Intel version of Boris FX 9, which does not install the transitions, instead of the non-Intel version. This version is designed to work on both types of machines so, even though you do not have an Intel Mac, all of the instructions for Boris FX 9.1 on the Intel Mac apply to users of FCP v5.1.2 on Power PC (non-Intel Mac). As a bonus, you WILL NOT have to launch FCP with the Cap Locks on and then relaunch with them off.
FCP v5.1 and v5.1.1 on Power PC (non-Intel Mac):
You get to make a choice here. If you are using FCP version 5.1 or 5.1.1 on Power PC (non-Intel Mac) you can install a version of Boris FX 9 that has transitions or you can opt not to. Here's how.
If you DO NOT want to install Boris FX 9 with transitions, follow the instructions above for Intel Mac users. What's the benefit of this? You WILL NOT have to launch FCP with the Cap Locks on and then relaunch with them off. Also, the rest of Boris FX 9 works as it should, or should I say, as it did in FCP v5.0. You will not have to be as mindful of where your CTI is or if the viewer window is open to "Filter". Since this installs native Universal Binary plugs, you won't have to do all that but, again, no transitions with this install.
If you DO want to install Boris FX 9 with transitions, follow the directions below.
CD Install:
Install Boris FX 9 from your CD as you normally would. Then run the " " FX 9.1 Update." patch (see below for link). The name of the file this downloads to your machine should be called "B FX 9.1 Updater.dmg". During the install of " FX 9.1 Update." patch, check: "Boris FX Keyframer non -Universal", "Boris FX for FCP non -Universal plugins" (this will automatically check the next three boxes) and "Boris FX Components". PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE read the release notes that accompany the download patch and follow them to the letter, especially the Final Cut Pro 5.1 section of "Host Application Notes". It is imperative that you do so. Starting FCP 5.1 for the first time after running this patch with the Cap Locks down is very important when using this version of the Boris FX 9 plug in.
Try and Buy Install:
Please, download a new Boris FX 9 "Try and Buy" and install that (see below for link). During the install of the Boris FX 9 "Try and Buy", check: "Boris FX Engine non -Universal", "Boris FX for FCP non -Universal plugins" (this will automatically check the next three boxes) and "Boris FX Components" to install BCC with transitions.

One last thing, before you use Boris FX 9 in FCP, make sure that you have the "Ownership and Permissions" set to "read/write" for all of the folders involved.
Here is another list of folders to check. This applies to each folder in the chain. Some of these you already checked but, here they are again.
